Crafts with Cardboard: Halloween Edition

Regardless of whether you have recently moved yourself or used a Pittsburgh moving company, one thing's for sure: you have lots and lots of boxes laying around! A great way to help clear out leftover boxes is to look for clever ways to use them. Especially if you have children, utilizing the boxes as decorations or building structures with them is a great family activity. So pull out those old boxes, gather the family, and let’s build some scary crafts to prepare for Halloween!

Dice Halloween Costume

This is a fun and simple costume, especially as a pair! Here is what you’ll have to have:

Materials:

  • Two Medium (3.0) Moving Boxes
  • White Paint
  • Black Paint or Construction Paper
  • Scissors or Box Cutter

Instructions:

  1. Paint the boxes white, and leave them dry.
  2. CAUTIOUSLY! Cut a hole in the sides and top of the boxes, for the arms and head.
  3. Find something circular to draw a circle. A bowl or plate will work great!
  4. Draw circles onto the box and color them. Or, draw and cut circles on black paper and attach them down to the box.

Castle Archway

Corrigan Moving Castle Archway From Moving Boxes

Want to truly amp up your decorations? Try an archway! Archways can be simply colored and made to match any style!

Materials:

  • Six Large (4.5) Moving Boxes
  • Wardrobe or mattress box (Several movers remove these larger boxes for your comfort. If your relocation is forthcoming, make sure to request your moving company to not remove these large boxes!)
  • Spray Paint (Whatever colors match your style)
  • Tape
  • Scissors or Box Cutter

Instructions:

  • Assemble the 6 large moving boxes. Paint as desired. We utilized a mix of gray and black to produce a brick and stone look.
  • While those are drying, cut out your chosen design on the flattened wardrobe or mattress box. This is for the top part that attaches the two stacks of moving boxes (columns) together.
  • Using a box cutter or scissors, CAREFULLY! Cut out that pattern.
  • Paint and decorate the top linking pieces.
  • When it’s dry, stack the large moving boxes one above another to create two pillars. Add tape to all of the seams. Color the tape for a clean look.
  • Tape the top connecting part to the top and front of the two columns.

*Tip- Add rocks or weights to the inner part of the bottom moving boxes to improve stability and support to your project.

Semi-Truck Photo Booth

This design is sure to make you the envy of the neighborhood! And even better, this one seems to be much more difficult than it really is! This build is ideal to enable kids to get in and out of the “truck cab”, while allowing for cute pictures from the front. This can easily be painted and decorated to appear like any superhero or villain’s vehicle, delivery truck, or favorite Pittsburgh moving company rig!

Materials:

  • 2 Wardrobe Boxes
  • 2 Medium (3.0) Moving Boxes
  • 2 Paper Plates
  • Two Paper Towel Rolls
  • Silver Paint or Aluminum Foil
  • Packing Paper or Tissue Paper
  • Box Cutter or Scissors
  • Tape
  • Spray Paint (whatever colors match your theme)
  • Folding Table and Tablecloth (Optional)

Instructions:

  • Assemble and color the medium and wardrobe boxes in your chosen color.
  • Begin by taping the wardrobe boxes together. Then trace where the outer doors and windshield will go. CAREFULLY! Cut out the doors and windshield using box cutters or scissors.
  • Take the large cardboard rectangle that you removed for the doors to create the front grill. Color that portion of cardboard black. Use silver paint or tape to make lines to give the appearance of the truck grill.
  • Put the two medium boxes in front of the wardrobe boxes, to create the front of the truck.
  • Paint or color the paper plates with black paint or markers. Use either silver paint or tape to create the wheels. Attach to the flanks with tape.
  • Cover the paper towel rolls with silver paint or aluminum foil. Scrunch up the packing paper or tissue and stuff the top of the roll to create the appearance of exhaust exiting out of the pipes. Tape to the top rear of the wardrobe boxes.
  • We placed a tablecloth and folding table at the rear of the wardrobe boxes to form the trailer for the truck. You can do something like this to match your theme and design however you like!
  • Attach add-ons like horns and lights to put it over the top!
