Prior to Listing Your Home

What is a realtor’s favorite word? Declutter! While listing your house, your realtor will generally give you tips for staging and making your house look sale-ready. Here are a select few tips from homeowners and how Corrigan Moving can aid!

  1. Free boxes for decluttering! Did you know that Corrigan customers can actually receive free used boxes when booking their move*? When available, our customers can acquire various sized boxes for free. Our offices also stock a line-up of moving supplies for purchase, such as tape, packing paper and bubble wrap. Start decluttering and packing before your realtor schedules your home photos and make your house shine in the pictures. Several customers reach out to Corrigan and reserve a move date prior to listing their house for this reason. Moving dates can be adjusted once your home is under contract, so take advantage of as many advantages as you are able!
  2. Is the garage a mess? Wardrobe boxes can help! Wardrobe boxes are large and tall, perfect for handling bulky things. You can leave the top of the wardrobe box open to organize and store children’s toys, sports equipment and long handled yard tools. This is sure to make your garage look cleaner and bigger with little effort! Click here for details about wardrobe boxes.
  3. Patch your walls like a pro. You’re likely to have painted walls and small nail holes needing to be touched up, be sure to do repairs prior to your real-estate pictures. Do you need to match paint colors? With a knife (be careful!), shallowly remove a quarter size hole from the top layer of paint. It is best to do this from a discreet spot, like behind furniture or a low corner. Then take that small paint sample to your local hardware store or paint shop, where they are likely to match your paint color perfectly. Using a drywall patch kit, repair your holes and paint with your perfectly matched touch up paint. It will look good as new! Here’s a sample demonstration of how to get the perfect paint swatch.

During Showings

Once your house is listed, you will spend time away to allow others go through and visualize themselves living there. Several homeowners who have used Corrigan Moving have shared tips that make those trips away during showings easier.

  1. Pack a small suitcase. Homeowners prefer to have their valuables and personal documents hidden away. Many people have found packing a small suitcase with these belongings to be an easy way to grab and go at the time of a showing.
  2. Consider a local pet daycare. Cats and dogs will also require a place to go during showings. Finding a local doggy daycare or daily pet care location is a great way to keep your pets happy and safe.
  3. Entertain the kids! Parents know getting children out the door can be a task. Packing a bag with small toys, games or art supplies is a great way to keep kids entertained and happy when frequently leaving the home.
  4. Free, free, free! Find free ways to pass the time during showings. If showings are scheduled back-to-back, you could find yourself away for hours at a time. Rediscovering your local farmers market, library or parks are free and easy ways to pass time. If you are moving nearby, consider booking a guided tour throughout your new city. Even if you’re familiar with your new town, you may be surprised by learning new and interesting history!

Offer: Accepted!

Bravo! Now that your home is under contract, the true work begins. If you have not contacted Corrigan Moving yet for an in-home or virtual estimate, now’s the time! Your Corrigan representative will create a custom move quote based on the services you are looking for. Following are some things to consider prior to your move consultation.

  1. Elect who’s packing. Corrigan Moving provides full packing service. We also offer packing on a smaller scale, such as packing only mattresses, china or fragile items. Decide if there is anything you want Corrigan to pack or if you will handle this yourself before your move consultant arrives. For more information on packing yourself, click here.
  2. Decide what is you’re moving. Establishing a plan for items to move prior to your move survey is essential to getting an accurate estimate. A Corrigan sales representative will go room by room throughout your house in order to get a thorough and inclusive inventory to accurately estimate the extent of your move. Your move inventory can always be changed, nonetheless you will want to have a clear understanding of what items you wish to have handled by Corrigan.
  3. Research donation locations. For items you prefer to donate, investigate local secondhand and thrift stores. Many can arrange free pickup services for donated furniture, remember these can be booked weeks in advance. Plan ahead and schedule your donation pickup prior to the move date. Corrigan is proud to support Habitat for Humanity, who has several locations that offer free donation pick up.
  4. Know what can and cannot be moved. Moving companies cannot transport items such as gasoline containers, chemicals or anything caustic (a full list of prohibited items can be found here). Your community is likely to have resources or a local return drive where they will receive hazardous items and electronics for proper disposal. Waste Management has additional information for properly disposing your hazardous household items.
